The Darkest Minds - Alexandra Bracken

Author: Alexandra Bracken
The sequel ‘Never Fade’ is out and the third one ‘In The Afterlight’ comes out on 28 October 2014
Genre: Dystopian
Compared to other Dystopian novels such as ‘The Hunger Games’ or ‘Divergent’, this story was completely different. Different in a positive way. There were a lot of unexpected things which was really fun.
Themes: Love, death, survival, family, friendship
Setting : US, there is no particular time given but it could be now or even 300 years into the future.
POV : Ruby, 1st person
Ruby is a really reliable narrator and I felt so connected to her. All the things that happened to her really got me.
Summary:
When Ruby woke up on her tenth birthday, something about her had changed. Something alarming enough to make her parents lock her in the garage and call the police. Something that gets her sent to Thurmond, a brutal government “rehabilitation camp.” She might have survived the mysterious disease that’s killed most of America’s children, but she and the others have emerged with something far worse: frightening abilities they cannot control.
Now sixteen, Ruby is one of the dangerous one's.
When the truth comes out, Ruby barely escapes Thurmond with her life. Now she’s on the run, desperate to find the one safe haven left for kids like her—East River. She joins a group of kids who escaped their own camp. Liam, their brave leader, is falling hard for Ruby. But no matter how much she aches for him, Ruby can’t risk getting close. Not after what happened to her parents. When they arrive at East River, nothing is as it seems, least of all its mysterious leader. But there are other forces at work, people who will stop at nothing to use Ruby in their fight against the government. Ruby will be faced with a terrible choice, one that may mean giving up her only chance at a life worth living.
My Opinion:
This book was amazing! No joke! It had me hooked from the beginning untill the ending. I loved the main character Ruby, I felt so connected with her throughout the entire story. The idea of the ‘Abilities’. The idea of ‘Orange’ kids who can put thoughts and feelings into your head sounds so interesting, amazing but at the same time also terrifying. I am so excited to read Never Fade, the sequel, and the third and final book In The Afterlight is coming out this month so I’m really looking forward to that.
The loveside in this book was really interesting because at some point I thought there was a love triangle coming, and then I thought it was not, and then again I thought it was.. Really interesting. One of the guys, Liam, is so damn cute and amazing! You cannot not fall for him. An the other guy? Well I’m not going to tell anything about him because then I would spoil a big part of the story for you and that’s not what I would want to do, now would I?
The ending killed me. I cried a lot but I think it was beautifully written and it made me feel all of the feels! Well done, Alexandra, well done.

If you're still hesitant if you want to read this book, please don't be! It's one of the best books I've read so far in 2014!
